Overview of legal forms: sole trader (ET), single-member LLC (EOOD), limited liability company (OOD), joint-stock company (AD), branch of foreign company, representative office.

When to pick each:

EOOD / OOD: best for small-to-medium businesses wanting limited liability; OOD for multiple shareholders.

AD: suitable for larger ventures seeking capital markets or many shareholders.

Sole trader (ET): simplest, lower compliance, but unlimited personal liability.

Branch / rep office: for foreign companies testing the market without a separate Bulgarian legal person.

Practical considerations: minimum capital requirements, shareholder liability, governance complexity, investor expectations, and exit/transferability.

In Bulgaria, 5% is not a general personal or corporate tax rate—it is specifically the withholding tax rate on dividend distributions paid to individual shareholders.

How the Numbers Actually Work
When operating a business through a Bulgarian company (such as an EOOD or OOD):

Corporate Income Tax (CIT): A flat 10% rate applies to net company profit.

Dividend Withholding Tax: A 5% rate applies to after-tax profits distributed as dividends to individuals.

3 Scenarios Where a True 0%–5% Rate Applies
1. Foreign Dividends Received by a Bulgarian Resident (0%–5%)
If you are a tax resident of Bulgaria receiving dividends from a foreign company, Bulgaria taxes those dividends at a flat 5%.

Foreign Tax Credit: Under Bulgarian law, if the source country already levied a foreign withholding tax equal to or higher than 5%, no further tax is due in Bulgaria.

Example: If a US or German firm withheld 15% at source, your Bulgarian liability is 0%. If the source country withheld 2%, you owe the 3% difference to Bulgaria.]]></video:description>

Bulgaria’s Double Taxation Treaties (DTTs) help international businesses avoid paying tax twice on the same cross-border income by utilizing the Credit method, overriding local laws, and setting reduced withholding rates.

Core Principles of Bulgarian DTTsScope: Apply strictly to direct taxes like Corporate Income Tax (10%) and Personal Income Tax, excluding indirect taxes like VAT.

Substance Over Form: Income must satisfy arm’s-length pricing, possess genuine economic substance, and involve an authentic beneficial owner.

Legal Hierarchy: Under Article 13 of Bulgaria's Corporate Income Tax Act (CITA), ratified international treaties take explicit precedence over domestic legislation.

Elimination Methods and ReliefTax Credit Mechanism: The resident country calculates tax on worldwide income but subtracts a credit for identical taxes already paid in the source country, limited to the domestic liability amount.

Application Process: Taxpayers file relief applications with the Bulgarian National Revenue Agency (NRA), which generally processes decisions within 60 days, https://paramounts.bg/en/services-for-companies-in-bulgaria/company-incorporation-in-bulgaria/

Withholding Tax Reductions: Treaties typically lower standard cross-border rates for dividends (often down to 5%), interest (frequently 0% to 10%), and royalties (5% to 10%).

Accounting and Compliance ConsiderationsDocumentation Requirements: Cross-border payments and related-party allocations demand rigorous transfer pricing files, invoices, and verifiable business logic, https://paramounts.bg/en/services-for-companies-in-bulgaria/financial-accounting/

  1. Recognition ThresholdBefore an item is recognized as a depreciable fixed asset, it must meet statutory thresholds:Standard Threshold: Items valued at €358 or more and intended for use for more than 12 months are recognized as fixed tangible or intangible assets.

Below €358: Smaller equipment, low-value items, and minor tools under this threshold are generally written off immediately as current operating expenses.

2. Tax Depreciation Categories and Rates (CITA)For tax purposes, the Bulgarian Corporate Income Tax Act divides depreciable assets into seven categories, setting maximum annual depreciation rates.

]]></video:description>

<video:title><![CDATA[Right Business Structure in Bulgaria. Accounting & Tax Implications. Company Reg for 190 EUR.]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[Choosing the right business structure in Bulgaria depends primarily on your liability risk, business scale, and tax optimization goals.

Most foreign and local entrepreneurs choose a Limited Liability Company (OOD or EOOD) for its legal protection and tax-efficient structure, while freelancers and small traders often opt for sole trading (ET).

1. Limited Liability Company (EOOD / OOD)The EOOD (Single-Member LLC) and OOD (Multiple-Shareholder LLC) are the most popular business entities in Bulgaria.

Structure: An EOOD has one owner; an OOD requires two or more.

Liability: Your personal assets are legally protected; liability is limited to your invested capital.

Minimum Capital: As little as approx. EUR 1 is required to establish the company.Accounting: Full bookkeeping is legally mandatory. You must file Annual Financial Statements with the Bulgarian Commercial Register.Tax Implications:Corporate Income Tax: Flat 10% on your annual accounting profit (adjusted for non-deductible expenses).

Dividend Tax: 10% withholding tax on distributed profits.

2. Sole Proprietorship (ET - Ednolichen Targovets)
An ET is suitable for small, low-risk, local operations (like individual service providers or small shops).

Structure: Registered under your personal name. You are legally recognized as a natural person performing commercial activity.

Liability: Unlimited personal liability. Creditors can pursue your personal assets for business debts.

Minimum Capital: No minimum capital requirement.

Accounting: Simplified income and expense tracking, though proper record-keeping is still required.

Tax Implications:Income Tax: Taxed at a flat 15% on the annual tax base.

Social Security: Mandatory monthly social and health insurance contributions, which are calculated based on a fixed minimum threshold.

3. Freelancer (SOL)If you provide services to international clients without establishing a commercial company, you can register as a self-employed freelancer (often called SOL).

<video:description><![CDATA[Planning a business trip can be exciting, but managing the associated expenses and ensuring they are tax-deductible can be complex. In Bulgaria, specific regulations govern how business trip expenses are treated for tax purposes. Understanding these rules is crucial for maximizing your tax benefits and avoiding potential issues with the National Revenue Agency (NRA). This blog post will guide you through the key aspects of managing business trips in Bulgaria, helping you stay compliant and optimize your financial resources.

The Crucial First Step: The Company’s Registered Address
A fundamental requirement for deducting business trip expenses in Bulgaria is that the trip must originate and conclude at the company’s registered address (its legal seat). This often-overlooked detail is critical. A trip starting or ending at an employee’s home, for instance, might not qualify for expense deductions, even if the travel is genuinely business-related.

Essential Documentation for Tax-Deductible Business Trips
Meticulous record-keeping is essential. Proper documentation proves the legitimacy of your business trip and is vital for tax deductibility. Here’s a breakdown of the documents you should maintain:

Travel Order/Assignment: This formal document, signed by management, authorizes the business trip. It should clearly state the employee’s name, destination, purpose of the trip, and dates of travel.
Detailed Itinerary: A comprehensive itinerary outlining the dates, destinations, modes of transportation, and the specific business activities planned for each location.
Expense Reports: Keep detailed records of all expenses incurred, including accommodation, transportation (flights, train tickets, fuel, taxi fares), meals, and other related costs. Crucially, every expense must be supported by original receipts or invoices.
Proof of Business Purpose: Demonstrate the direct link between the trip and your company’s business activities. T]]></video:description>

<video:title><![CDATA[Bulgaria Residence Permit: A Complete Guide for EU & Non-EU Citizens: Tax Implications]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[A Bulgaria residence permit allows EU and non-EU citizens to live legally in Bulgaria for more than 90 days.
EU/EEA citizens register their residence locally, while non-EU citizens usually need a D visa before applying for a residence permit. Permits are issued for specific purposes such as work, business, study, or family reunification and must be renewed before expiry.

Introduction
Bulgaria has become an increasingly popular destination for EU citizens, remote professionals, entrepreneurs, and retirees. Factors such as relatively low living costs, EU membership, and a favourable tax environment attract people who want to live or work in the country for more than a short stay.

If you plan to remain in Bulgaria for more than 90 days, you must comply with Bulgarian residence rules. These rules differ significantly depending on whether you are an EU/EEA citizen or a non-EU citizen.

What Is a Bulgaria Residence Permit?
A residence permit is a legal authorisation allowing a foreign national to stay in Bulgaria beyond the standard 90-day short-stay period.

It provides lawful access to:

residence in Bulgaria,
healthcare and insurance registration (subject to status),
employment or business activity (where permitted),
education and long-term integration.
Residence permits are issued for a specific legal purpose and are time-limited.

Types of Residence Permits in Bulgaria
Bulgarian law distinguishes between several residence statuses, depending on duration and purpose:

Short-term stay – up to 90 days (no residence permit required).
Long-term residence – more than 90 days, based on work, business, study, family, or other legal grounds.
Permanent residence – available after meeting statutory conditions, typically after several years of continuous lawful residence.
The applicable procedure depends primarily on nationality.

Residence Registration for EU / EEA Citizens
EU and EEA citizens benefit from simplified residence rules under EU free-movement legislation.

Freiberufler

Gewerbetreibende

Tätigkeit: Handel, Handwerk und produzierendes Gewerbe. Dienstleistungen ohne akademischen/künstlerischen Schwerpunkt gelten ebenfalls oft als Gewerbe.
    Anmeldung: Zwingend beim zuständigen Gewerbeamt.
Steuern: Gewerbesteuerpflichtig (wird ab einem Gewinn von

<video:title><![CDATA[Tax Residency in Bulgaria: The COMPLETE Guide for Expats]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[Bulgarian tax residency is determined by spending more than 183 days in the country within a calendar year or having your "centre of vital interests" there. Residents are taxed on worldwide income at a flat 10%, though Double Taxation Treaties (DTTs) mitigate dual-taxation risks.

Key Qualifying Criteria
You are considered a Bulgarian tax resident if you meet any of the following conditions:The 183-Day Rule: You reside in Bulgaria for more than 183 days in any 12-month period. You become a tax resident for the entire calendar year in which the 183rd day is exceeded.Centre of Vital Interests: Your family, permanent home, and principal economic or business activities are predominantly based in Bulgaria.Assignment Abroad: You are sent abroad by a Bulgarian company or the State.

Tax Residency vs. Address Registration
Address registration (getting a residence certificate and an LNCH) grants you the right to stay in Bulgaria legally.
However, simply owning a property or having a registered address does not automatically make you a tax resident. You must also satisfy the centre of vital interests test.

Tax Implications for ExpatsWorldwide Income: Once you are a tax resident, your global income (including foreign dividends, rental income, and capital gains) is taxable in Bulgaria.
The Flat 10% Rate: Bulgaria has a uniquely flat 10% personal income tax rate, which also applies to corporate income.
Double Taxation Treaties: To avoid paying tax on the same income in two countries, Bulgaria has DTTs with over 70 countries.
You can use these treaties and the tie-breaker rules to determine your single country of tax residence.

How to Obtain a Tax Residency Certificate
If you need to prove your tax resident status to your home country's authorities, you must apply for a Certificate of Tax Residence through the Bulgarian National Revenue Agency (NRA).
Required Documentation: You will generally need to provide proof of your stay (e.g., utility bills, tenancy agreements, bank s]]></video:description>

Legal and registration

No specific "freelancer" category: Individuals typically operate under a Civil Contract for occasional work or register as a "Self-Employed Individual" (SOL) for regular activity.
National Revenue Agency (NRA) registration: You must register with the NRA and file a declaration (OKD-5) to start and end your activity.
BULSTAT registration: Depending on the type of work, registration in the BULSTAT register may also be necessary.

Taxation

Flat 10% income tax: The personal income tax rate is a flat 10%.
Automatic 25% expense deduction: The tax is not on your total income but on 75% of it, as 25% is automatically deducted as "recognized expenses".
Effective tax rate: Due to the automatic deduction, the effective rate is 7.5% of your total income, before social security contributions are deducted.
Quarterly payments and annual declaration: Taxes must be paid quarterly, and an annual tax declaration is required.
VAT registration: You must register for VAT if your earnings exceed 50,000 BGN (approximately 25,000 EUR), but voluntary registration is also an option below this threshold.

Social security

Mandatory contributions: Social security contributions are mandatory for self-employed individuals to access public healthcare and other social benefits.
Deducted from tax base: These contributions are deducted from the taxable income before the final income tax is calculated.

Other considerations

Residence permit: Foreign freelancers may be eligible for a residence permit, though a permit from the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy is often a prerequisite.
EU citizenship: EU citizens can register as self-employed, with online registration possible via an electronic signature.

Dividends distributed by Bulgarian companies to foreign shareholders and resident individuals are subject to 10% WHT (increased from 01.01.2026) under the domestic legislation (see the Withholding taxes section for exceptions for payments to EU/EEA tax residents and under double tax treaties [DTTs]).

Companies are liable to deduct TDS at 10% from the total dividend payout of resident investors if the dividend amount is higher than Rs. 5,000. Investors can get a TDS refund as a credit against their total tax liability when filing their income tax return.

Levying this tax under Bulgarian tax law applies to any allotment to the benefit of a person as a result of that person's share in the capital of another person, bringing about a decrease in the equity of the latter, including:

Income from shares;
Income from shareholding, including shareholding in unincorporated companies, or from other rights treated as income from shares;
Concealed distribution of profit

The declaration is filed with the territorial directorate of the National Revenue Agency either by registration of the payer of the income or by the place in which the payer of the income must have registered. Where the payer of the income is not subject to registration, the declaration is to be filed in the National Revenue Agency - Sofia.

<video:description><![CDATA[Tax Advantages in Bulgaria, Paramount Services Bulgaria https://paramounts.bg/en/home/ ; https://paramounts.bg/de/start/
Bulgaria’s tax system is notably advantageous for businesses and individuals:

Low Corporate and Personal Income Tax: With a flat rate of 10%, Bulgaria offers the lowest corporate and personal income tax rates in the European Union, making it an attractive destination for tax efficiency.

Dividend Taxation: Dividends are taxed at a mere 5%, further enhancing the country’s appeal for investors and business owners. Furthermore, when dividends are distributed to parent companies based within the EU, the tax rate is reduced to an exceptional 0%, presenting an even more advantageous fiscal environment for cross-border investments within the European Union

Social Contributions Cap: The social contributions are capped at a monthly salary of 3550 BGN. This means that salaries above this threshold are exempt from additional social contributions, being subject only to the income tax. For instance, if your salary is 5,000 EUR, social contributions would be levied only on the first 2,300 EUR. The remaining amount up to 10,000 BGN would be subject to a 10% personal income tax.

Freelancers Benefit from Lower Tax Rates: Freelancers are entitled to a 25% deduction for approved expenses, applied directly to their annual turnover. For example, with an annual turnover of 100,000 EUR, freelancers are not obligated to provide evidence for these expenses. Consequently, they are taxed only on 75,000 EUR of their income. This results in an effective personal income tax rate of just 7.5%.

Reverse Charge VAT is crucial for Bulgarian businesses in maintaining strict EU compliance and streamlining cross-border trade. The reverse charge mechanism shifts the responsibility for VAT payment from sellers to buyers, reducing administrative burdens and lowering the risk of tax fraud. Digital invoicing, automated record-keeping, and advanced cloud-based accounting systems enable companies to achieve accurate VAT reporting and improved financial transparency. This system benefits firms engaged in intracommunity acquisitions, import services, and targeted domestic transactions by standardizing invoicing procedures and consolidating VAT liabilities.

Adopting reverse charge VAT promotes efficient self-assessment, optimizes cash flow management, and ensures adherence to both Bulgarian tax laws and EU fiscal regulations. Modern accounting technologies deliver real-time analytics, automated error detection, and seamless compliance—all vital for precise financial operations. Strategic tax planning that incorporates reverse charge VAT offers a competitive edge by enhancing cash flow, reducing audit risks, and fortifying investor confidence.

Clear invoicing protocols combined with proactive tax monitoring are essential for upholding fiscal integrity in today’s market. Expert tax advisory services guide companies through the complexities of reverse charge exemption criteria and regulatory challenges. Tax in Bulgaria: Complete Guide on Bulgarian Tax Rates

Tax in Bulgaria offers a competitive and transparent framework for businesses and individuals. Bulgarian Corporate Tax is set at a flat rate of 10%, ensuring clarity for companies and straightforward planning for business owners. Personal Income Tax in Bulgaria is also a flat 10%, making individual tax obligations predictable and easy to manage. The standard Value Added Tax (VAT) is 20%, with reduced rates available for sectors like tourism and medical supplies.

Bulgarian tax regulations include withholding tax on dividends, interest, and royalties for non-residents, aiding international tax planning and the avoidance of double taxation. Real Estate Tax and local municipal transfer taxes are structured to support transparent property taxation and regional development. Tax deductions and incentives are available for business-related expenses, including entertainment, vehicle costs, and other deductible items that help lower taxable income.

Simplified tax procedures benefit small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through streamlined digital tax administration. Electronic filing, proactive record keeping, and real-time compliance monitoring reduce administrative burdens, ensuring adherence to Bulgarian tax laws and EU fiscal regulations. Advanced cloud-based accounting solutions automate VAT calculations and enhance the accuracy of tax reporting.

The Bulgarian tax system is designed to attract both domestic and international investment with flat tax rates and efficient online processes. Key highlights include the 10% Corporate Income Tax, 10% Personal Income Tax, and competitive withholding tax rates—all of which create an inviting environment for business registration and global operations. Digital tax administration and robust audit compliance further reinforce the integrity of the tax system.

Situational Leadership® II is a process for developing people by
providing effective leadership, over time, so that they can reach
their highest level of performance. It is based upon a relationship
between an individual’s development level (various combinations
of competence and commitment) on a specifi c goal or task and the
leadership style (various combinations of Directive and Supportive
Behavior) that the leader provides.

There are four leadership styles and four development levels in the
Situational Leadership® II Model. The top of the model illustrates the
four leadership styles—Style 1 (Directing), Style 2 (Coaching), Style
3 (Supporting), and Style 4 (Delegating). These leadership styles
correspond with the four development levels—D1, D2, D3, and
D4—shown on the development level continuum at the bottom of
the model.

Additional information and support here, Paramount Accounting & Legal Services Bulgaria, office@paramounts.eu https://paramounts.eu/ https://paramounts.bg/en/home/

The goal of Situational Leadership® II is to match the leadership style
that is appropriate to an individual’s development level at each stage
of development on a specifi c goal or task. The leader provides the
direction and support that an individual needs in order to move along
the development continuum—through the development cycle—from
D1 (developing) to D4 (developed). As development level changes,
the leader’s style should change.

Matching Leadership Style to Development Level
To determine the appropriate leadership style to use with each of the
four development levels, draw a vertical line up from a diagnosed
development level to the leadership style curve running through the
four-quadrant model. The appro]]></video:description>

The profit for the year that is generated by companies (legal entities) in Bulgaria is subject to 10% corporate tax. The procedure for the calculation, declaration and payment of the corporate tax is stipulated in the Corporate Income Tax Act (CITA).

According to CITA subject to corporate income tax is not the annual accounting profit of the company, but its annual profit for tax purposes, that is, the tax financial result. The tax financial result is determined by transforming the accounting financial result in the order and manner specified in this law, with:

1. the permanent tax differences;

2. the tax temporary differences;

3. other amounts in the cases provided for in CITA.

The most widely spread unrecognised expenses are those not related to the company’s business or those that are not justified with documents (i.e. without accounting documents, contracts, acceptance and submission protocols or reports, etc.).

How are the annual financial results declared for tax purposes?

Companies declare their financial result for tax purposes by filing an annual tax return (ATR) with the National Revenue Agency (NRA). All companies, except those that have had no operations during the respective year and which have no corporate tax payables, are obliged to file an ATR.

The ATR is filed in a standard form. The ATR form is approved by the Minister of Finance and is available here. To the A]]></video:description>

<video:title><![CDATA[Municipality Taxes in Bulgaria: A Complete Breakdown]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[Municipality taxes in Bulgaria are local taxes levied by each municipality to fund public services. The specific rates are determined by the local municipal council within limits set by the national Local Taxes and Fees Act.

Additional information and support here, Paramount Accounting & Legal Services Bulgaria, office@paramounts.eu https://paramounts.eu/ https://paramounts.bg/en/home/

Types of Municipality Taxes. The main local taxes in Bulgaria include:

Real Estate Tax (Property Tax): An annual tax owed by the owners of immovable property (land, buildings, etc.). The rate, set by the municipality, ranges from 0.01% to 0.45% of the property's tax value. For a main residence, the tax is due with a 50% reduction.

Waste Collection Fee: A mandatory annual fee paid along with the property tax. The amount is also determined by the municipality, often based on the property's tax value or book value for companies, and covers waste management services.
Transport Vehicle Tax: An annual tax on registered motor vehicles. The amount depends on the vehicle's type, engine size, and age. This tax is paid to the municipality where the owner has a permanent address or registered office.

Tax on Acquisition of Property: A transfer tax due when real estate or motor vehicles are transferred (e.g., through sale, gift, or inheritance). The rate ranges from 0.1% to 3%, determined by each municipality, and is typically paid by the buyer.

Tourist Tax: Levied on overnight stays in accommodation facilities. The rate, set by the municipal council, ranges from BGN 0.20 to BGN 3 per night, depending on the accommodation type and location.
Licence (Patent) Tax: A tax for certain business activities, such as for taxi services.

To register a Bulgarian company remotely in 202X, you authorise a local agent with a notarised (and where required, apostilled) Power of Attorney, choose the right company type (EOOD, OOD, EAD, AD), secure a compliant registered address, open a temporary capital account, deposit the share capital, e-file with the Commercial Register, convert the account to an operating IBAN, and complete tax/VAT onboarding—all without travelling.

Additional information and support here, Paramount Services Bulgaria, office@paramounts.eu https://paramounts.eu/ https://paramounts.bg/en/home/

You can own 100% of a Bulgarian company as a non-resident and complete the entire process remotely.
EOOD/OOD are fastest and cheapest (capital can start around 1 EUR); EAD/AD suit investor-ready teams (plan 25,000 EUR).
With a complete pack, the Commercial Register decision typically arrives in 1–3 business days; build extra buffer for notarisation, apostille, and courier time.
Address evidence, exact spellings, and capital figures must match across every document and the bank certificate.
Budget beyond filing: translations, apostille, courier, and monthly accounting

BE CAREFUL : Lawyers fees to rtegister remotely vary from EUR 550 to EUR 1,200. Find a Partner with a long-term vision.

Tax returns
In general, taxpayers have to submit annual tax returns. Employees who work on the basis of an employment contract with a local employer are not obligated to submit tax returns if they have employment income only, the entire income has been taxed during the year via the employer’s monthly payroll withholding, and at 31 December of the tax year they have only one employer who makes an annual reconciliation of the due tax by 31 January of the following year. In all other cases, individuals, including those who receive income under employment contracts with non-resident employers, are obligated to file an annual tax return.

For tax purposes, spouses are treated as separate taxpayers. No income splitting is allowed. Income is declared in the year in which it is actually received, regardless of the year when it was earned and to which it relates.

The deadline for submission of tax returns is 30 April of the following year. A reduction of 5% of the outstanding income tax is applicable if the annual tax return is filed electronically by 31 March of the following year, the individual has no outstanding public liabilities, and the tax is paid by 31 March of the following year. The discount of 5% is capped at BGN 500.

Individuals are allowed to file a one-off corrective tax return without a penalty by 30 September of the following year.

The following information also needs to be declared in the annual PIT return of a Bulgarian tax resident:

<video:description><![CDATA[Company registration in Bulgaria: overview, Additional information and support here, Paramount Services Bulgaria, office@paramounts.eu ; https://paramounts.eu/ ; https://paramounts.bg/en/home/

The requirements for company formation are straightforward and the registration procedure is simple. It only takes 3 working days if you have all necessary documents prepared in advance.

Any foreign company or person can register a business activity in Bulgaria. An investor can be a foreign person who is a:

Bulgarian resident;
Resident of a country, member of the European Union;
Resident of a non-EU country.
What is more, a foreign investor can open a company in Bulgaria through power of attorney. The process can be delegated to a trusted local law firm. Companies registered in the country are considered Bulgarian legal entities.

Company formation goes through two basic stages:

Preparation of the needed documents;
Registration of the company in the Registry Agency.
After a new company is formed, you should also hire accounting services in Bulgaria. That way you would be sure to comply with the taxation requirements in the country. Luckily, the tax rate in Bulgaria is quite low in comparison with other European countries.

The costs of the registration procedure vary depending on:

the type of company you choose to register in Bulgaria, and
the legally required minimum capital.

<video:description><![CDATA[Bulgaria is set to adopt the euro on January 1, 2026, pending the fulfillment of convergence criteria and public support for the transition, Additional information and support here office@paramounts.eu , https://paramounts.bg/en/home/ , https://paramounts.eu/

Current Status and Timeline
Bulgaria has been preparing for euro adoption since it joined the European Union in 2007. The current target date for replacing the Bulgarian lev with the euro is January 1, 2026. The country has been participating in the European Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM II) since July 10, 2020, which is a prerequisite for joining the eurozone. As of now, Bulgaria is working to meet all necessary convergence criteria, with the main challenge being price stability due to inflation concerns.

Government Commitment
The Bulgarian government, led by Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova, has expressed strong commitment to adopting the euro. The government has stated that it is ready for the transition and has initiated the final procedures with EU institutions to facilitate this process. A public information campaign is also underway to educate citizens about the benefits of adopting the euro.

Public Sentiment and Political Considerations
Despite the government's readiness, there is some public skepticism regarding euro adoption. President Rumen Radev has proposed holding a referendum to gauge public opinion on the matter, highlighting the lack of consensus among citizens about the timing and readiness for the change. Concerns about inflation and the impact on purchasing power are significant factors influencing public sentiment.

Bulgaria's path to euro adoption is progressing, with a target date set for January 1, 2026. However, the success of this transition will depend on meeting the necessary economic criteria and achieving public support for the change. The government is actively working to address concerns and prepare the country for this significant shift in its monetary policy.
