Bulgarian Type D Visa Processing Times: Standard vs. Fast-Track

While the standard decision timeframe for a Bulgarian Long-Stay Visa (Type D) for third-country nationals is up to 35 working days, many applicants qualify for an accelerated procedure.

Fast-Track Processing: 15-Day Decision Window

Under current Bulgarian immigration regulations, an expedited 15-calendar-day processing time applies to specific labor, educational, and family-based categories.

Professional and Employment Categories.

The following high-priority work sectors benefit from the 15-day fast-track:

Single Residence and Work Permit (SRWP): The standard route for long-term employment in Bulgaria (typically valid for up to 3 years).

EU Blue Card: Designed for highly skilled specialists with university degrees or high-level professional qualifications.

Intra-Corporate Transfer (ICT): For managers, specialists, or trainee employees transferring from a non-EU company to a Bulgarian branch.

Seasonal Workers: Applies to employees in the agriculture or hospitality sectors for stays between 90 days and 9 months.

Scientific Researchers: For individuals conducting research under a hosting agreement with a Bulgarian research organization.

    Education and Family Categories

Accelerated processing is also extended to these non-employment grounds:

    1. Full-Time Students: Foreign nationals admitted to a degree-granting program at a Bulgarian university.
    2. Exchange Students: Pupils participating in secondary education exchange programs.
    3. Family Members of Bulgarian Citizens: Spouses and children of Bulgarian nationals.

    Standard Processing: 35 Working Days

For all other immigration grounds not listed above, the processing time remains up to 35 working days. This standard window typically applies to:

    • Foreign Retirees (Pensioner D-Visa)
    • Trade Representative Office (TRO) specialists
    • Religious Missionaries
    • Investors and non-profit organization members

Pro Tip: In complex cases, the authorities may extend these deadlines by up to 20 additional days if they require further security clearances or additional supporting documentation. Always ensure your file is complete at the time of submission to avoid delays.

    How to Apply

Most visa applicants will need to set up a visa appointment.

The embassy or consulate information may include specific local instructions about scheduling appointments, submitting your visa application, and other frequently asked questions.

Embassy and consulate websites will also explain any additional procedures for visitors who may need an earlier visa appointment.

This procedure, however, varies from country to country.

Can I Apply for a Visa While in Bulgaria?

No, it is not possible to apply for a visa from within Bulgaria, regardless of your current immigration status. If you are already in Bulgaria and wish to apply for a visa, you must return to your country of residence and submit your application there.

In some exceptional cases, based on your personal circumstances (e.g. war refugee, medical condition, etc.), a visa can be issued from another country that may be more easily accessible from Bulgaria, such as Greece, Romania, Macedonia, Serbia or Turkey. However, this is only possible with explicit permission from the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is important to note that this instution is typically reluctant to grant such permissions, making this option not really viable.
